In writing a classification essay, you are required to apply a skill you usually utilize everyday in your life. This simply involves classifying things in to various categories.

The success of the essay will depend upon the topic of the classification essay and choosing a one which you are well versed with is important. The topic should also represent a defined category.

If you were to discuss three items within the chosen category, then your classification essay will have three body paragraphs and preceeded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion. For example, if you are talking of different types of research methods, then the three body paragraphs will talk about three different research methods. These paragraphs should describe the different methods and use compare and contrast method to identify similarities and differences between these three types.

In the introduction, you need to state the category clearly. Then in the thesis statement, mention the items which you plan to include within the category essay. Brief background information of the items must be mentioned in the introduction.
